A university is considering establishing a new requirement for graduation in addition to its normal requirements about completing coursework: all students must attend a course on public speaking to develop skills that will be useful in speaking in front of large groups of people. Do you agree or disagree that a public speaking course should be a requirement for all of the university's students? why?

托福寫作真題范文:大學(xué)生是否應(yīng)該參加公共演講課

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Be sure to use your own words. Do not use memorized examples.

In this knowledge-oriented society, top priority has been given to skill acquisition due to its significance in students’ future growth and development. Under this circumstance, an absolute consensus can hardly be reached whether all university students must foster the skill of speaking in public through taking related course. For my part, I side with advocates based on following sound reasons.

First of all, regardless of majors and fields, as long as a person is in the academic circle, presenting their work to the public, or at least to a room of experts, will be inevitable. This requires a person to be comfortable speaking in public and have acoherent logic(條理清晰的邏輯) that the audience can follow while speaking. These are the exact goals of a public speaking course. In fact, being able to convey one's ideas orally is one of the key factors determining one's academic success. For instance, Jingrun Chen, a Chinese mathematician, was initially rejected by the academia(學(xué)術(shù)界) because of his inability to speak to an audience about his work. According to one of his colleagues, whenever he had to speak in public, he sweated like he was going to faint and could not utter a complete word(說), which obviously hinders(阻礙) his academic achievement being spread to a wider range. This is why I believe that such courses are necessary for every student with the intention of(目的是)becoming an academic.

Second of all, if a student's aspiration does not lie in academia, he/she would also benefit from such a course immensely whatever career he/she chooses. In a company, except common employees, every leader, regardless of his/her level of power, has to speak to his/her subordinates(下屬)almost on a weekly basis. Without the imperative public speaking skills, I personally doubt that he/she will be able to climb up on the corporate hierarchy(升職). As the higher one's position gets, the larger the crowd he/she will have to speak to. I can make the same argument for practitioners(從業(yè)者) in politics, medicine and laws because to students with aspiration to have a position in those fields, public speaking will be as common as turning on a computer and must be as natural as drinking a cup of water when feeling thirsty. As we can see, outside of academics, public speaking skills are also in high demand and are crucial for one's vocational development.

Last but not least, not only does a public speaking course improve one's skills but also fosters their confidence. Just as prehistoric humans obtain confidence from hunting beasts and winning fights against their rivals, we modern people also acquire confidence through various methods, including speaking in public. A recent research conducted by China Daily has revealed that it is public speaking that fosters one's confidence. As a result, if confidence is what a university wants in its graduates, then public speaking course would be one of its first choices.

All in all, I strongly support the university's action of adding public speaking to the general requirement for all students because it can be a real asset for their future development.
